Here is one of the lesser known “work at home” scams floating about the internet. This one is quick and simple to spot.

Articles, eBooks and reports on a variety of subjects are in demand from skilled content writers. When you see ads floating about the internet trying to get response, one should assume the advertiser is making money from these ads to take the time to post them. Normally, the ads are to get you interested enough to purchase some training, how to guide, or a membership to some exclusive site.

If you must purchase anything to get trained or hired – the job is not legit.

Fact: You will not get a job writing online by taking a course or buying a list.

This sneaky tiger of the internet jungle prays on those talented in crafts or handy with small tools. Advertisements that promise to deliver income for putting these craft projects together can be very attractive.

Most often these scams claim you will be sent materials and instructions and paid for the finish products when they are sent in to the employer. Sounds good at first glance but there is always a catch. With this scheme there may be several catches.

The first thing is the materials and instructions. Most often you are required to invest in the “how to guide”, the supplies or special equipment to make the product. Equipment and supplies costs can vary but some have been known to end up costing several hundred dollars. This is the real product these advertisers are selling. You will find there is a no return policy for the equipment or supplies that you must purchase, and if there is any type of guarantee look forward to getting the run around trying to get customer service.

Another way this tiger attacks your pocket book is with a small statement somewhere in the fine print that will say. “All work must pass quality standards.” And guess what? None does. You buy the supplies, you buy the equipment, you create the products as directed from the guide they sold you and then your products are rejected. Of course they are rejected after you have sent them to the company and they do not have to send them back either!

It only gets worse. There is no legal recourse. You agreed to all of this when you sign and order the first materials. You have just been HAD!

There is a huge market for hand-crafted products. If you have talent making craft items and you can market them you should go for it. However, you will not make money assembling products at home for a “work at home – assembly job” outfit.

Fact: You can make money selling hand crafted items but not by assembling these items for companies advertising for work at home assemblers.

“Make extra money by stuffing envelopes from home!”

If you have ever seen this one or maybe considered it let me tell you now that this is a scam that has been around for years.

Advertisements for ‘at-home-envelope stuffers can be found in newspapers from the local library that date back several decades. Yet the advertisements are still posted because people still fall for it.

One of the reasons people fall for this scheme is due to the unsolicited mail they have received and they think somebody must have stuffed all those envelopes addressed to them.

But that is not the case. The junk mail arriving in our mail boxes is sent by bulk machines and no living person actually put anything in those envelopes.

The scam works like this. There is a fee to get you started in the envelope stuffing business. In return for this fee you get all the instructions to get started. The instructions that you will receive will be “how to” instructions for placing ads like the one that you just fell for to get others to send you money.

It’s a total con. The only way to make your money back is to fool others into thinking they can make money at home stuffing envelopes as well.

Fact: There are no work from home - envelope stuffing jobs to be had!

Chapter 2

There are many things to consider when making a decision to work from home. I have been self employed sense 1994 and it has been a roller coaster ride. Sometimes a downright love-hate relationship. We all have our own reasons for wanting to work for ourselves. Mine was two fold. I was having trouble finding work in the local economy and I wanted to stay in the small town I was living in. I also had young children at home and it was cheaper and I felt better to keep my kids home then paying strangers to watch them.

Here is my quick list of the things home business enthusiasts fail to announce when trying to sell you the next work at home business or idea. I’m not trying to be negative .. I’m trying to be realistic. Knowledge is power and knowing the obstacles can give you power to overcome.

What they do not tell you about working from home …

• Working for yourself means you are always on call for your business needs.
• You do not get any benefits and must pay for your own insurance and retirement plans.
• You will have a harder time getting credit.
• You will get taxed heavier then anyone else in your income bracket.
• You won’t have all the extra time you thought you would have - I promise.
• You will do 10 times more paperwork then you ever imagined.
• Your friends and family will not think of your work .. as work.
• Your friends and family will innocently expect you to give them free services.
• Everyone will assume your schedule is flexible and expect you to bend to theirs.
• Others will expect you to do all domestic chores because your home all day.
• You will soon realize clients can be more demanding then that ex boss.
• Hiring employees is a whole new headache.
• Your potential to run into legal problems will quadruple.
• You home life and work life become entangled, balance becomes a battle.
• You put on weight from being on your computer more.
• You begin to loose energy from the weight gained.
• You must continue to learn so that you can manage all aspects of your business.
• There is a constant stress of trying to calculate the “next” payday.
• Clients don’t always pay on time but the bill collectors are always on time.
• Progress is often slow, setbacks are often major (and expensive).
• If your not balanced - your family will feel neglected and your social life will go down the tubes.

Some of the positives from working at home.

• You have the freedom to create your own schedule.
• You can save a bundle on transportation costs without the daily commute.
• You can take random vacation days.
• You can spend much more time with family and save on day care costs.
• There are some tax deductions and an increase in write offs available. (but often not enough to compensate for SE taxes)
• You can work in whatever attire you wish. No dress codes.
• You will get out of the office gossip drama.
• You can be as creative as you desire and utilize your skills in more ways then most jobs allow.
• Your earning potential is much more then working for someone else.

With all that said there are schemes and scams out there that are directed at those who want to be work-at-home moms, those who are looking for an additional income source and those who are retirees looking for part-time work to supplement their incomes. In the next few posts we will be looking at some of the ways to spot and avoid these schemes.

A pyramid scheme is an illegal multilevel marketing program in which people pay an entrance fee for the opportunity to recruit others to do the same. Pyramid schemes have no products. Chain letters in which you send money to the person who sent you the letter, then you forward the same letter to a number of others is an example of a pyramid scheme.

Pyramid schemes have been circulating for centuries. You’d think over the span of a few thousand years people would be able to easily identify a pyramid scheme when they are introduced to one. The people who start these programs up, however, can be very persuasive. I’ve never ran across a pyramid scheme that said “pyramid scheme” on it.

These schemes can be very attractive and cleverly disguised. Once we understand how they work, they are much easier to identify. Here are some sure signs that can help you recognize a pyramid scheme at first glance.

Do you have to recruit? The definition of recruit is - to engage in finding and attracting employees, new members, students, athletes, ect, for the purpose of selling them a system to recruit others.

The use of the word recruit or any variation of should be a major tip that the program might be a pyramid scheme. This can include “exclusive opportunities” to earn large sums of money recruiting people to sell new products or services.

Another big warning sign is the “Buy this secret …” This is an advertisement or email that offers you the opportunity to buy a secret that will allow you to make huge sums of cash with little or no work required and you can sell the secret to others for profit and they will make money for you.

There are no legitimate internet businesses that will immediately make you thousands of dollars a month. Yes, there are some wonderful programs available that are earning that kind of money for its participants, but there was no secret ingredient. The secret is hard work, effort and dedication.

The last warning sign I want to cover is – anytime a business opportunity stresses “Let others do the work”. This is a sure tell sign of a pyramid scheme. You will only receive information on how to promote for the purpose of recruiting more people into the scheme.

Earlier in the series we discussed the buying and selling of free information over the Internet. An extension of the same subject, slightly modified is the selling of  instructional courses online.

Of course we’ve already covered the free information sellers, but there are other ways to lose money with instructional “how to” courses not related to the free information types mentioned earlier in this report.

While there are many high quality instructional courses available online, there are even more that are completely bogus.

At the top of the bogus list are the courses that promised to teach you ‘data entry’. The data entry scam has evolved and takes on many forms disguised as virtual assistant jobs under many names today. This course will teach you nothing about data entry nor will you land a decent job as a virtual assistant from their programs. This course teaches you how to sign up for affiliate programs and expects you to place advertisements to recruit others into buying the same program.

This program and others are affiliate marketing products in disguise. Affiliate marketing is definitely not a scam, but when a product such as the data entry and other work from home jobs are misrepresented with the intent to con people out of money — these avenues become the scam not the affiliate marketing process itself.

Before spending your money for an online instructional course, ask yourself a few questions:

• Can I find this information myself elsewhere maybe for free?
• Can this information really help me?
• Is the information being offered what it appears to be?
• Is there a guarantee?
• Will I be required to spend additional money to execute the information?
• How stiff will the competition be?
• Is the person teaching the course knowledgeable or well-known in his or her field?
• Does the advertisements sound too good to be true?
• Will I commit the time needed to learn the information?

Always be sure to look elsewhere on the net by doing some searches to find the opinions of others about the product before purchasing. Testinonials on the product’s website may sound terrific, but will always be biased. By searching the name of both product and seller you may avoid costly mistakes by learning from others who were willing to share their experience or reviews of the product.

Most computers today come with firewalls pre-installed and working out of the box. Windows added that feature to XP.

Your firewall should be plenty adequate to protect your computer. That is not going to stop those members of the welcome to the jungle committee from trying to sell you another one!

You may get emails, pop ups and advertisements that will inform you that your firewall is in some way not working or as good as “insert their product name here”.

Like those sneaky virus protection software sellers in the last part of this series the firewall software sellers have the pop up scanners that can be confusing, in order to get you to pay for a secure internet connection.

If you already have a firewall and find you are getting these pop ups, look to your virus and malware protection software to find the intrusion. Do not purchase another firewall. Multiple firewalls do not add protection. More is not better in this case. More than one firewall product will interfere with one another and could potentially cause worse damage.

These come in many types. From trojans to worms they can cause big problems on the users system. This is where the free antivirus software can keep you protected. At the time of this writing, AVG, AVIRA and AVAST are three of the top place award winners for free antivirus software. Personally I have used all three and settled with Avast as my protection software of choice and install it on the computers I assemble for clients.

Spyware and Malware

Items that call into this category range from - chaotic as viruses or as simple as a tracking cookie from an advertiser wanting to see where you came from or where you left to from a website. These little buggers can sneak in from website graphics and invisible code often with no warning at all. While Avast is one of the better programs to block and handle spyware, it is not truly the purpose of the software. Again there are free choices for spyware protection that work just fine! One feature that is harder to find in free spyware software is real time protection. Currently I am using Spyware Terminator which does offer real time protection and seems to be doing a great job using hardly any resources. You can do a search for free spyware protection and look for review sites that compare several different programs available to choose from.

A common ploy used by many *not so nice* software companies is to force a popup on the users screen that appears to look like a Windows box that announces that the user has a virus. The window then gives the user a link to click that will remove it. The user is then taken to a website that asks for a payment to remove the virus. Many times there is no virus at all, only a small piece of malware that the same site put there so they could con you into buying their product.

With all the great free protection tools available for personal use it is frustrating to see so many people who are lead to believe that they must pay to stay safe. We may not be able to stop viruses and malicious codes on the web but we can do our part to protect ourselves and thanks to a few great companies out there, we can do it for free.

Ready to explore of the first dangers of the first dangers of the internet jungle?

Continuing in the series “Internet and Home Business Scams Revealed” we are ready to start exploring some of the “welcoming committee” scam type issues that you will come across online.

One of the biggest areas I see newcomers and experienced surfers alike fall into is a the “buying what is out there for free” trap. I’ve been there too.

There are literally hundreds of thousands of reports, eBooks and software products online that are completely free yet someone is ready to sell it to you! The information may be repackaged in a different format or bundled with another freebie.

Some digital products in the free digital world commonly found for sale are recipes, eBooks, software, music files, website scripts and how to guides.

I cannot stress this enough – RESEARCH the product and the seller before buying it. Not only could you be buying a “free” product, you may be overpaying or worse yet - you could be providing sensitive identity and credit card information to the bad guys! I am not implying that all freebie sellers are bad guys, sometimes great businesses add value to a normally free product or the free product has what they call “resale rights” which give vendors the rights to sell the product. Enough on that, let’s figure out some ways to check out our product before purchasing it.

It’s really quite simple to give you a starting point. So simple you may laugh. Google! Or your choice of internet search engine. The search engines have scanned review sites, forums, and blogs looking for your search term and will be ready to give you immediate feedback from a large array of website and opinions.

Google the sellers name and the product name separately – scan a couple of pages of results and see what others have to say. Simple enough to do and a quick search can give you a general feel for how this product is doing in the marketplace and peoples reaction to it. Be sure to make a mental note of what type of website is providing the opinion as competitors can search and make comments and reviews too. But normally it is easy to see which direction the majority of people are leaning.

If the product is more than $20 dollars it is worth your time to make a couple more searches.

Check The Better Business Bureau for the company or sellers name.

Search for the seller or product at RIP OFF REPORT.

My last bit of advice on buying digital products and services is, if the product or service is over $50 – sleep on it. This will help override the “impulse” buying decision that can be turned on by good sales copy. If you have done your research and still want it the next day…then by all means – buy it!

And when possible – let others know about your experience with the product that you purchased to help others make a better informed buying decision in the future.

What can you do to accelerate your MLM network marketing business during the Holiday season and gets it going during what most people think as the “sluggish time” of the year for network marketing?

Some things you can do for your MLM network marketing success during the holidays.

1. Fruit baskets.

You can get inexpensively small fruit baskets, put your samples or coupons in and decorate it in the colors of your MLM network marketing company.

Include an invite to a seminar that they can attend at not cost. Give them out to friends, neighbors, associates, clients, customers, and family. You will glad you did.

2. Holiday audio cards.

Send out with your Christmas cards a CD you recorded especially for that person, and wish them happy holidays. Then tell them you would love to chat with them at the start of the year because you want to give them the gift of success.

This is a great way to introduce the concept of MLM network marketing success to these folks.

3. Hold a holiday customer appreciation luncheon or reception.

You can do this at your home. Simply invite your best MLM customers to a holiday appreciation event, and make them the superstars of that party.

Have small gifts for them, and let them know how much you appreciate their business. Then ask them for referrals for the coming year. You will get them from every single person who was at that event.

4. Holiday upline open house.

If you have an organization, you could either open your house or someone who has a sizeable home and invite your MLM network marketing distributors to an open house.

Have them bring guests. Have a party that celebrates the holidays but is sponsored by your company. Let it be a fun social with music and games, and then connect with the guest to follow up in January.

5. Neighborhood holiday mailer.

Go to the library, and look in the cross-reference index for your address. You will notice there are a ton more in that index that are in your neighborhood.

Make a copy of the addresses, as they are your neighbors, then send them a Christmas card introducing yourself as their neighborhood rep, and wish them a Merry Christmas and Happy new year.

Then follow up in January and see if you can set an appointment to chat with them about your MLM networking products. Telephone numbers are included on the cross-index reference guides found in your library. You are their neighbor, and that gives you some instant connection with them.

6. Visit community holiday functions.

The thing is to connect, connect and connect.

You need to connect to new prospects during the holidays and community functions are a great way to do this. Get out and become a “holiday MLM network marketing machine.”

Network and meet people and make new friends and give away something to them as a holiday gift. Make sure every person you talk to has a gift and your card. And that you have some form of contact info as well. Check your Sunday newspaper for where these events are.

7. The holiday success card.

Send people you know, and also prospect a seasonal card, and include within it an article about success, goal setting, leadership, time management, or any other success oriented topic. This will set you apart from the rest.

Rock your MLM network marketing business during the holidays. You will be surprised at what might happen to your business.

Funny! When you enter the Internet, there is nothing that indicates that you have just entered an untamed jungle. You don’t hear any roaring lions or other menacing sounds and you don’t see any wild animals that are planning to have you as the main course for dinner but they are out there. Everyday hundreds, thousands, maybe hundreds of thousands of people decide to explore the idea of working from home or starting their very own home-based business. They have heard of others that have done so who have been very successful…maybe even wildly successful at it.

Some of these people are very computer savvy folks. They may even have the skill to build their own web pages. They definitely know the ins and outs of operating a computer.
